Wellbeing
At our school, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Whether your child needs help with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, we are here to help them thrive at school and in daily life.
School Values
Our school is guided by six core values that shape how students learn, behave, and support one another:
- Community – We show respect for each other and take pride in our school. We work together to create a safe, positive, and welcoming environment for everyone.
- Courage – We are brave enough to try new things, take risks in our learning, and keep going even when things feel challenging.
- Challenge – We engage with learning that isn’t always easy. We persist, problem-solve, and push ourselves to grow.
- Creativity – We think imaginatively, solve problems in creative ways, and express ourselves through the arts and innovative thinking.
- Compassion – We practise kindness, empathy, and care for others. We are aware of how our actions affect the feelings of those around us.
- Confidence – We believe in our abilities and develop the knowledge and skills to feel capable, independent, and proud of our achievements.
How we support student wellbeing
Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
We do this through:
- teachers who help students feel welcome and included
- access to school counsellors, school psychologists and specialist staff
- programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
- help for students who are new or changing year levels
- clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- developing health care plans for students
- open communication about wellbeing and support.

PAX – Positive Behaviour for Learning
At Illawong Public School, we use the PAX Good Behaviour Game as part of our Positive Behaviour for Learning approach. PAX helps students develop self-regulation, teamwork, respect, and positive learning habits in a fun and supportive way.
Through clear expectations, shared language, and consistent routines, students learn how to:
- Work cooperatively
- Stay focused on learning
- Manage their behaviour
- Show kindness and respect
PAX supports a calm, safe, and positive learning environment, helping every student feel valued, confident, and ready to learn.
Counselling For Families
Illawong Public School has counselling staff who are members of the school learning and support team. The school counsellor can assist when families undergo a trauma or big change.
A teacher may recommend the service by referring a student to the school’s learning and support team. As a parent or carer, you may refer your child directly to the school counselling service. Students can also self-refer to the service.
The school counselling service can:
- support students who are worrying about school work, friends, getting in trouble at school or feeling down
- help parents and carers make decisions about your child’s education
- assess a student’s learning and behaviour
- help teachers and students identify and address disabilities that may affect learning
- liaise with other agencies regarding student wellbeing.
School counselling is confidential.
For more information about learning and support teams and the school counselling service, please contact your school.
